I was reading Tara Contractor's piece in this week's Apollo Magazine, "How Whistler showed his metal," published 15 May ahead of the Tate Britain Whistler retrospective opening 21 May, and the sentence that stopped me was buried near the middle. Contractor writes that Whistler was "mixing resin into the 'sauce' of paint used to create his nocturnes so that his thin paint layers would not turn matte." That is not an art-historical footnote. That is a working studio decision, the kind a painter makes after watching a previous version of the same painting go dead on the wall after a year. Whistler had clearly already lost a few nocturnes to mattness before he started thickening the binder, and the recipe Contractor names is what he arrived at.

Contractor writes that Whistler was “mixing resin into the ‘sauce’ of paint used to create his nocturnes so that his thin paint layers would not turn matte.” That is not an art-historical footnote. That is a working studio decision, the kind a painter makes after watching a previous version of the same painting go dead on the wall after a year. Whistler had clearly already lost a few nocturnes to mattness before he started thickening the binder, and the recipe Contractor names is what he arrived at. Most of the Apollo piece is about the painting s, which is the right job for an art-historian. What I want to do is what Contractor implies but doesn’t spell out: read those material choices back from the bench, and translate what they mean for anyone living with a painting that has metallic in it. The two metallics Whistler actually used were not the same thing Contractor is careful to name them. The Peacock Room used “books upon books of gold leaf,” real gold, hammered into sheets so thin they read as luminous gas. That is the most expensive and the most durable choice: gold doesn’t oxidise, doesn’t dull, doesn’t shift colour over time. Two centuries from now the Peacock Room gold will read exactly as Whistler intended. But Contractor also tells us he used Dutch metal in other works, which she correctly identifies as “imitation gold made from copper and zinc, which Whistler varnished to control sheen.” Dutch metal is not gold. It is a brass alloy beaten into leaf. It oxidises. Without a sealing varnish, Dutch metal will turn green or grey within a decade. Whistler knew this in 1870 and varnished accordingly, which is why his Dutch-metal surfaces still read warm today. Most contemporary painters using metallic foils right now have not made that decision. They are using the imitation, calling it gold in their notes, and not sealing it. Five years into the next owner’s possession the work will start to dull, and ten years in the warmth will be gone. That is a craft choice the collector almost never sees explained.
