The Sainsbury Centre at the University of East Anglia is a 135-metre steel-lattice hangar with glass at both ends. Norman Foster designed it in 1978 and the original idea was a single universal volume where Francis Bacon hangs in the same continuous space as Oceanian masks, Henry Moore bronzes, Modigliani heads, Picasso ceramics. The light through it is diffused and even, a flooded shed-light that treats a Bacon and a New Guinea sculpture as members of the same visual register. Then on 20 May the museum announced that the Gatsby Foundation has given £91.2m to renovate the building, the largest gift in its history, and Foster + Partners (Foster's own firm) will lead the work. What £91.2m actually rewrites in the gallery The press release lists the renovation’s headline moves: improve the building envelope, halve energy use, add photovoltaics to the new roof, and replace the solar-controlled blinds to bring “more natural light into the gallery spaces”. Bathrooms, lifts, signage, café, kitchen, every adjacent infrastructure too. None of this is wrong, and some of it is overdue. But the blinds are the part a painter watches. Original Foster daylight at the Sainsbury Centre is unprogrammed. It comes in through the louvered double-layered roof and the two glazed ends and falls everywhere at once. Why a painter goes now, before the light becomes settings A Bacon’s pinks are fugitive on a calendar. Modigliani’s terre verte glazes shift under repeated UV. Soutine’s lead-rich whites darken in any system that lets even diffuse daylight in without strict filtering. Conservators have been writing about this for decades, and the result is that most museums of late-19th and 20th-century painting have moved toward filtered, artificial, calibrated light. The Sainsbury Centre has been one of the last big spaces where a Bacon reads under the same flooded daylight as a wood mask on the same line of sight. That visual register is what is on the renovation table. Whatever the new blinds do, and “more natural light” can mean almost anything in practice, the Sainsbury Centre after the work is a different reading room. Whether that room is gentler on the Bacons or harder on them is the conservator’s question.
