What the spec sheet quietly says next to the loudness: it's also one of the least permanent colors on the rack. The loudest note in the painting is the one built to fade first. Why a fluorescent pink is brighter than the light hitting it Most pigment just reflects part of the light that lands on it. A normal red soaks up the blues and greens and bounces back the red. A daylight fluorescent does something extra. It also absorbs invisible ultraviolet and the short-wavelength end of the visible spectrum, then re-emits that energy as visible pink. So it throws back more visible light than actually fell on it. That’s the glow, the sense that the color is lit from inside. It isn’t a trick of contrast. The pigment is genuinely doing more than reflecting. That is also exactly why the green lenses. The pink is dumping energy into one narrow band, and a green filter is the complement that knocks it down enough for the eye to judge. A painter reading that one production detail already knows how this color will behave on a canvas. A pigment that loud does not sit in the middle distance. It comes forward, past everything, every time. You don’t place a fluorescent. It places itself, at the front. The part the loudness is hiding Here’s what the spec line says, read closely. Gamblin rates the new Hot Pink and Hot Violet at Lightfastness V. On the standard scale that runs I to V, V is the bottom. Very poor. Fugitive. Jackson’s puts the reason plainly: “The pigments required to produce fluorescent colors’ luminous hues are naturally translucent and tend to have low lightfastness.” The same chemistry that makes the glow makes the fade. Those fluorescent dyes are organic and unstable under exactly the ultraviolet they feed on. Hang the painting where daylight reaches it and the UV that powers the glow is also slowly breaking the dye that produces it. The color doesn’t just dim the way an old red dims. It loses the fluorescence first, the engine of the brightness, and what’s left settles into an ordinary, much quieter pink. Gamblin is honest about the trade.
