It is the single rule that most often decides whether an oil painting stays whole or cracks, and the damage from breaking it usually shows up years after the painting has left the studio. Four words, and most of the cracked paintings I have seen up close broke that one order. What “fat over lean” actually means in oil painting Fat means more oil. Lean means less. A “fat” paint has a higher oil-to-pigment ratio, straight from the tube or boosted with a medium, and it stays flexible as it cures. A “lean” paint has had some of that oil cut back, usually with a solvent like Gamsol, so it sets faster and harder. The rule says the fatter, more flexible paint always goes on top of the leaner paint, never underneath. Winsor & Newton frame the why around flexibility, and Gamblin states the order without hedging: “The under layers of a painting should be leaner than the upper layers.” That is the spec. Build down to up, lean to fat, every time. Why breaking fat over lean cracks an oil painting Here is the part a supply-shop diagram never quite explains. Oil paint does not dry by evaporating. It cures by absorbing oxygen and slowly turning to a solid, and that takes far longer than the surface feeling dry suggests. A film stays soluble and moving for months, often a year or more, after it feels touch-dry on top. So picture a lean layer sitting on top of a fat one. The lean paint, with less oil, skins over and locks first. Underneath, the fat layer keeps drinking oxygen, keeps moving, keeps very slightly shrinking, for months after the top has gone rigid. The flexible thing is now trapped under the brittle thing, and the brittle thing cannot follow it. It splits. That is traction cracking, and it is mechanical, not bad luck. A lean layer over a fat one is a crack on a timer. Reverse the order and the problem disappears. A fat, flexible top layer can stretch and settle over a lean underlayer that has already done most of its moving. The painting flexes as one body instead of fighting itself. How a painter keeps a painting fat over lean at the bench The method is simple to say. Thin the early layers with a touch of solvent so they go down lean and set quickly, then add a little more oil or medium to each layer as the painting builds, so the surface ends up the fattest.
