It dries in seconds, can't be blended or piled thick, has to live on a rigid panel, and outlasts almost everything else in the room. Here is what that means at the bench and on the wall. That is the entire binder. No oil, no resin, no solvent. Painters were making pictures this way two thousand years before paint came in tubes, and a few of us still are. That recipe is the whole reason egg tempera painting looks the way it does, behaves the way it does at the bench, and ages the way it does on a collector’s wall. Most of what matters about it follows from those three ingredients. What egg tempera painting actually is: pigment, egg yolk, water The yolk is an emulsion, oil and water held together, and that is what makes it such a clean binder. Thinned with water it brushes like a wash; as the water flashes off, the egg locks the pigment to the ground in seconds. Tate’s definition keeps it plain: tempera is “pigment mixed with a water-soluble binder medium, usually egg yolk.” The result is matte to soft satin, fine, slightly cool, and unusually luminous, because the layers go down thin enough that light passes through them and bounces back off a white ground. That luminosity is not a happy accident of the medium. It is the only way the medium can work, and it dictates everything a painter does next. Why the egg tempera painting technique can’t blend or go thick Two rules fall straight out of the recipe, and they are the rules oil painters find hardest to accept. First, you cannot blend wet into wet. Tempera sets too fast to push around, so tone is built by laying many small translucent strokes side by side and over each other, hatching and cross-hatching until the values arrive. The look is unmistakable once you know it: optical, drawn, assembled out of thousands of marks rather than smeared into place. Egg tempera doesn’t blend; it accumulates, stroke by tiny stroke. Second, you cannot go thick. A heavy load of tempera shrinks and cracks as it dries, so there is no impasto, no buttery ridge catching the light. Everything stays close to the surface. That is why a tempera painting reads as patient where an alla prima oil reads as fast. For a collector reading legitimacy, this is useful: a finished tempera is hundreds of hours of small strokes.
